Alternatives to Liposuction

Liposuction is advertised everywhere these days – one billboard in our city says “Lose inches. No sweating.  No kidding!”

This sounds great when you’re in the middle of a tough workout, or saying no to your favorite foods.  But is it really an answer?

Even surgeons say no.

Using liposuction as a means to lose weight can cause disappointment down the road, he says, because “liposuction changes the way you gain and lose weight.” The human body has a predetermined number of fat cells, or a set-point. When fat is removed by liposuction, it can prompt the body to gain weight in areas that previously weren’t problem spots. In fact, Da Lio says he frequently sees patients return two to four years after their first procedure to request it again.

- Dr. Andrew Da Lio, M.D., a clinical associate professor of plastic surgery at the UCLA School of Medicine

Although liposuction can be helpful if there are specific areas that you’d like to reduce,  and you’re already following a great plan for healthy eating and exercise, there are no shortcuts.

Too bad – I’m still waiting until they invent a risk-free, exercise-free, deprivation-free method.   But for now, I’d better go work out.
